The problem is that people are used to thinking that good is when the birds are singing around, everything is fine, everyone is full and happy. But simple scientific experiments show that such conditions are the beginning of death. An experiment called "Universe 25" was conducted, in which ideal conditions were created for mice, in which, it would seem, - eat, sleep and no worries. It all ended with the death of all rodents without exception By the way, the experiment is named the number 25, because the same fate befell all 24 previous attempts to create a mouse paradise. Here is a vivid example of how a seemingly good was created for mice, but everything turned out to be evil for them.

The concept of "good": what is it?

In modern society, the concept of goodness is roughly the following: it is something pleasant, comfortable, warm, soft and fluffy. But everything that is unpleasant and inconvenient is evil. But the paradox is that a person is able to develop only in unfavorable conditions. As Porfiry Ivanov said: "The key to health is hunger, cold and physical activity." And for a modern person, such things are more associated with something unpleasant - with evil and destruction.

And, unfortunately, today any action is evaluated not from the point of view of benefit and rationality, but from the point of view of sensations “pleasant” or “unpleasant”. And good is, in essence, a synonym for the words "rationality" and "benefit." Moreover, the benefit should be for everyone, and not for some handful of the elite, to the detriment of others.

It will probably be difficult to accept the next idea, but evil is always within us. The world is neutral in relation to us, and more often than not on the contrary: it seeks to help us in our development. And only our subjective ideas about how it should be that force us to divide the world into good and evil.

What is evil? The evil demon Mara, who tempted the Buddha under the Bodhi tree, Satan, who tested Jesus in the desert, hunger, cold, disease, viruses, bacteria, parasites - all this is considered evil. In fact, this is exactly what helps a person to develop.

So, let's take an ordinary person, as they say, in a vacuum. For example, he gets sick. And, of course, the main evil that befell him, he will consider illness. But if you deeply analyze the situation, it turns out that the disease either protects a person from his own stupidity, or pushes him to overcome some of its limitations. Because a person is so constructed that most often the language of pain and suffering is most accessible to him. And if you read the biographies of many saints, you can come to the conclusion that at the beginning of their life many trials fell to their lot, but it was these trials that led them to perfection.

For example, the great yogi Milarepa even committed murder at the dawn of his life, but it was thanks to the realization of the cruelty of the deed that Milarepa was able to embark on the path of spiritual development. The same can be seen in the life path of Seraphim of Sarov - he also had a difficult childhood .

Therefore, based on the above, we can conclude that good is what leads to development, and evil is what leads to degradation. Perhaps, from the point of view of a child and his not entirely reasonable parents, pampering this very child is good and a manifestation of love, but from an objective point of view, it is rather evil.

In Buddhist philosophy, ignorance is considered the root of all suffering and the cause of all evil. It is because of ignorance that the most vile and vile things are done. No, we are not talking about ignorance of the multiplication table or Newton's laws. We are talking about ignorance of the principles of the world order, which tell us that everything that we have created is returned to us. However, it is Newton's third law that tells us about this. And often a person can be very intellectually developed, but at the same time not understand basic things, be in illusions - this is, from the point of view of Buddhism, considered the root of all evil.

From the point of view of yoga philosophy, the cause of evil is dual perception. Here we can talk about two aspects of this perception. Duality manifests itself in the fact that we separate ourselves from the surrounding world, believing that we exist autonomously, and also in the fact that we, again, divide the world into black and white.

What is goodness and kindness?

It is important to understand that evil, as such, does not exist. The concept of good and evil is very conditional, so poking your finger at someone and shouting "sinner" is, to put it mildly, not entirely reasonable. Maybe a nutritionist who, based on his ideas about proper nutrition, talks about the benefits of eating meat, is fully confident that he is doing good for people, enlightening them, giving them useful knowledge, and so on. But can it be considered a blessing that a person calls for further violence against animals?

On the other hand, the man who unleashed a world war and killed millions of people was a vegetarian and, in general, was very fond of animals. What can I say ... it would be better if he learned to love people...

And the root of evil in both cases is ignorance, as is rightly noted in Buddhism. If a nutritionist thought about the fact that meat does not grow on a tree, and the ruler of the Third Reich remembered the words of Jesus "whoever comes with a sword will die by the sword," then maybe ... however, history does not know the subjunctive mood. But the moral in general is clear: all evil is committed only because a person does not have a complete view of the picture of what is happening. Is it possible to determine what is happening on it from one fragment of the picture? And a person does exactly this: having snatched out some narrow segment of reality, he draws conclusions (a priori wrong) and begins to act based on his wrong conclusions. And can we say that there is malicious intent?

Most people sincerely believe that they are acting for good. A grandmother can feed her granddaughter with meat, saying: "Grow healthy" - religious fanatics go to the "holy war", believing that they are protecting God, and at the same time no one considers himself a villain. The villain is always there - on the other side of the barricades. And on the other side of the barricades - they think the same thing.

Another root of evil can be considered a person's selfish desires. Often, it is in the pursuit of some fleeting pleasures that a person commits the most unworthy deeds. However, this can already be considered a secondary cause, ignorance still remains primary. If a person does not understand that it is not entirely reasonable to harm others for the sake of some fleeting benefit, then this is precisely the root cause.

So what is kindness? Based on the above, we can say that kindness grows from the seeds of knowledge. Is it possible to assume that a person who knows about the law of karma will harm others? It's like hurting yourself. Another thing is that the concepts of harm and benefit are also relative. But here again the question of knowledge arises: if a person understands what is harmful and what is good, then he will never advise to expand the vessels with cognac ...

The most important commandment

Good and evil are often discussed in the context of the commandments. Say, this is good, this is bad, and so on. But the most important commandment was given to mankind by Jesus: “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you love one another. " What is done out of love cannot be evil. Of course, this concept can also be interpreted in different ways. Perhaps someone calls addiction to dumplings love. And it is stronger in this case than love for killed animals. But the word "love" stands for "Liu di Bo ga Ve give." That is, love is not about gastronomic addictions and not serenades under the windows, it is, first of all, knowledge.

Love is to know God, that is, to understand his higher plan and the world order of the Universe. And if a person knows how the world works, he simply cannot commit evil.

Therefore, the first thing to tell children about is not about the multiplication table, but about the law of karma. Because this is the moral foundation on which everything else is laid down. You can perfectly learn physics and chemistry, but if there is no understanding of the basic principles of the world order, then this knowledge is then used to draw nuclear mushrooms under the sky, under which, as the classic rightly noted, “there is a lot of space for everyone”.

Are all people good?

The Bible says that man was created in the image and likeness of God. Can the Creator be evil? That is, we are all initially kind. Therefore, it is important to avoid judging those who, in our opinion, are acting inappropriately. Firstly, a person does it out of ignorance, and secondly, maybe we perceive it incorrectly, and the understanding of good and evil is just the same distorted in our country.

Everyone is at their own level of development. And, based on his level of development, he understands what is good and what is evil. All we can do is try to give the person knowledge. However, one should not catch up with everyone and do good.

In Buddhism, there is such an instruction that if we see a person who is mistaken in something, we need to tell him about it three times. It must be assumed that we are talking about periodically, with interruptions in time, to indicate to a person three times that he is mistaken. If this does not lead to a result, the person must be left alone, this is his lesson, and he must gain experience. Because well-meaning violence is also violence. When everyone around tells a vegetarian that he needs to eat meat, otherwise he will die without protein, this is also done not in order to fray a person's nerves, but solely out of good intentions.

And most importantly, if we see only evil around us, then it means that the problem is in ourselves. The reflection in the mirror does not appear until an object appears in front of the mirror. We receive from the world only what we transmit into it at the level of body, speech and mind. And if the world is hostile to us, then this is not a reason to fall into pessimism, this is a reason to think about the fact that we are doing something wrong.

Three aspects of action

In any action, the most important thing is a good motive. But it is important that the benefits are objective for all participants in the action. If the executioner asks for help in sharpening the ax, it will certainly be a blessing to fulfill such a request, but not for everyone. When talking about the benefits of an action, three aspects should be considered:

  • Personal benefit.
  • Benefits for others.
  • Benefits for the universe.

If all three points coincide, then the action is a blessing. Cutting down the forest to build a railway and transport carriages with alcohol along it is, of course, very profitable, but it will harm the environment and people around. And the most interesting thing is that in the end it will cause harm to the one who conceived all this, because everything is interconnected. You cannot, while living in one house, set fire to a neighbor's room, and then close yourself in your own and rejoice at how everything turned out well.

Well, again, it is worth paying attention to the fact that benefit is what ultimately leads to development. And from this point of view, Satan did good when he tested Jesus. Indeed, as our ancestors said, all demons are gallant soldiers of God. And the most important thing to understand is that an ignorant person cannot be kind by definition. For the simple reason that he simply does not know what is useful and what is harmful. Therefore, knowledge is our most powerful weapon against the evil of ignorance, and our main enemy is our delusions.
